Cleo ("Cleo," "we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting it through our compliance with this policy. This policy describes:
- The types of information we may collect or that you may provide when you download, install, create an account on, access, or use the "Cleo" dating application (the "App").
- Our practices for collecting, using, maintaining, protecting, and disclosing that information.
This policy applies only to information we collect in this App and in email, text, and other electronic communications sent through or in connection with this App. This policy DOES NOT apply to information that:
- We collect offline or on any other Cleo apps or websites, including websites you may access through this App.
- You provide to or is collected by any third party, including other apps, websites, or content that may link to or be accessible from or through this App.
Our website and these other third parties may have their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to read before providing information on or through them.
Please read this policy carefully to understand our policies and practices regarding your information and how we will treat it. If you do not agree with our policies and practices, do not download, create an account, or use this App.
By downloading, creating an account, or using this App, you agree to this privacy policy. This policy may change from time to time. Your continued use of this App after we revise this policy means you accept those changes, so please check the policy periodically for updates.
Children Under the Age of 18
The App is not intended for children under 18 years of age. No one under age 18 may provide any information through the App. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18.
If you are under 18, do not use or provide any information on this App or through any of its features, create an account on the App, use any of the interactive or public features of this App, or provide any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, email address, or any screen name or user name you may use. If we learn we have collected or received personal information from a child under 18 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information. If you believe we might have any information from or about a child under 18, please contact us at support@cleo.dating.
Information We Collect and How We Collect It
We collect information from and about users of our App:
- Directly from you when you provide it to us.
- Automatically when you use the App.
Information You Provide to Us
When you download, create an account, or use this App, we may ask you provide information:
- By which you may be personally identified, such as name, phone number, date of birth, geolocation data, or any other identifier by which you may be contacted online or offline ("personal information").
- That is about you but individually does not identify you.
This information includes:
- Information that you provide by filling in forms in the App. This includes information provided at the time of creating an account on the App or while using the App, including its AI or communication functionality, and requesting further services. We may also ask you for information when you report a problem with the App.
- Profile information you submit during onboarding and while using the App: photos, gender, gender preference, ethnicity, religion and religious observance, education, occupation or industry, hometown, relationship goal, preferences about children, lifestyle answers (drinking, smoking, cannabis, recreational drugs), love languages, and political views.
- Conversations with Cleo (the in-app matchmaker AI) and messages exchanged with matched Users.
- Records and copies of your correspondence (including email addresses and phone numbers), if you contact us.
You may also provide information for publication or display ("Posted") on user-facing areas of the App, including your profile content that is shown to other Users when we introduce you (collectively, "User Contributions"). Your User Contributions are Posted and transmitted to others at your own risk. Please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable. Additionally, we cannot control the actions of third parties with whom you may choose to share your User Contributions. Therefore, we cannot and do not guarantee that your User Contributions will not be viewed by unauthorized persons.
Information We Collect Through Automatic Data Collection Technologies
As you navigate through and interact with our App, including when you download, access, or use the App, we may use automatic data collection technologies to collect certain information about your device and your browsing and usage activity and patterns, including:
- Usage Details. When you access and use the App, we may automatically collect certain details of your access to and use of the App, including traffic data, location data, logs, and other communication data and the resources that you access and use on or through the App.
- Device Information. We may collect information about your mobile device and internet connection, including the device's unique device identifier, IP address, operating system, browser type, mobile network information, and push notification token (if granted).
- Stored Information and Files. The App accesses photographs you choose to upload from your device.
- Location Information. The App collects location information about your device, used to determine whether you are within Cleo's currently supported service area (the New York City metropolitan area).
If you do not want us to collect this information do not download the App or delete it from your device. In addition, you may opt out at any time by sending us an email at support@cleo.dating. However, please note that opting out of the App's collection of location information will disable its location-based features, which are essential to the Service.
Third-Party Information Collection
When you use the App, certain third parties (described under "Disclosure of Your Information" below) may receive information about you or your device as part of providing infrastructure or analytics services to us. We do not allow third-party advertising networks or interest-based advertising trackers within the App.
How We Use Your Information
We use information that we collect about you or that you provide to us, including any personal information, to:
- Provide you with the App and its contents, and any other information, products, or services that you request from us.
- Find and introduce you to potential matches based on the information you and other Users provide.
- Operate the in-app AI matchmaker ("Cleo") so it can understand your preferences and surface compatible introductions.
- Send you push notifications when Cleo finds a potential match for you (only if you have granted notification permission).
- Fulfill any other purpose for which you provide it.
- Give you notices about your account, including updates to these terms or the App.
- Carry out our obligations and enforce our rights arising from any contracts entered into between you and us.
- Respond to support requests and investigate safety reports.
- Improve the App, identify crashes, and prioritize fixes.
The usage information we collect helps us to improve our App and to deliver a better and more personalized experience by enabling us to: estimate our audience size and usage patterns; store information about your preferences, allowing us to customize matchmaking according to your individual interests; and recognize you when you use the App.
We use location information to verify that Users are within Cleo's currently supported service area (the New York City metropolitan area) and to deliver location-aware features in the App.
We do not use your personal information to display interest-based or targeted advertising. We do not sell your personal information.
Artificial Intelligence and OpenAI Disclosure
Cleo's matchmaker AI is provided in part through OpenAI's API. Your conversations with the in-app matchmaker (and certain content from your profile) are sent to OpenAI's API for natural-language processing so we can understand your preferences and identify compatible matches.
Your messages and content are not used to train OpenAI's models. Under OpenAI's API data-usage terms, API traffic is excluded from model training. The processed output is stored on Cleo's servers and used only to provide the Service.
AI tools can sometimes provide inaccurate information. When information is input into an AI tool, such information is being provided to the system's processors, and AI tools are generally not equipped or designed to protect confidential or sensitive data. Accordingly, Users should exercise care when determining what data to share with the AI and what questions to ask it. Cleo is not liable for the AI's misuse of, or inaccurate answers about, personal confidential data, business confidential data, any other proprietary, confidential or sensitive data or information of Users or others, or any emergency or private information not related to the Service (including but not limited to self-harm, physical emergencies or disasters).
By accessing and utilizing the Application, the User expressly acknowledges and agrees to these terms regarding the use of AI, specifically incorporating third-party AI services. The User accepts the inherent unpredictability, biases, and potential errors associated with all AI use, and assumes responsibility for content validation.
Disclosure of Your Information
We may disclose aggregated information about our users, and information that does not identify any individual or device, without restriction. In addition, we may disclose personal information that we collect or you provide:
- To our subsidiaries and affiliates.
- To contractors, service providers, and other third parties we use to support our business. Specifically, Cleo currently shares relevant data with:
- Supabase (United States) — hosts your account data, profile, photos, intros, and messages.
- OpenAI (United States) — processes Cleo matchmaker chat content for matchmaking, under terms that prohibit training on API traffic.
- Twilio (United States, via Supabase Auth) — sends SMS one-time-passcodes for sign-in.
- Expo, Apple, and Google — app distribution and push notification delivery.
- Sentry (United States) — crash reporting and error monitoring.
- To a buyer or other successor in the event of a merger, divestiture, restructuring, reorganization, dissolution, or other sale or transfer of some or all of our assets, whether as a going concern or as part of bankruptcy, liquidation, or similar proceeding, in which personal information held by us about our App users is among the assets transferred.
- To other Users — when we introduce you to another User as a potential match, that person sees the profile information you have chosen to make visible (name, age, photos, and the profile fields you've filled in). The other User also sees the introduction message generated by the AI based on your stated preferences.
- To fulfill the purpose for which you provide it.
- For any other purpose disclosed by us when you provide the information.
- With your consent.
We may also disclose your personal information:
- To comply with any court order, law, or legal process, including to respond to any government or regulatory request.
- To enforce our rights arising from any contracts entered into between you and us, including the Terms of Use.
- If we believe disclosure is necessary or appropriate to protect the rights, property, or safety of Cleo, our Users, or others. This includes exchanging limited information with other companies and organizations for the purposes of fraud protection and credit risk reduction.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your personal information with advertisers.
Choices About How We Use and Disclose Your Information
We strive to provide you with choices regarding the personal information you provide to us.
- Location Information. You can disable location access in your device settings. Note that some features of the App will not function properly without location.
- Push Notifications. You can disable push notifications in your device settings or in the App settings at any time.
- Photos. You can remove or replace photos you have uploaded to your profile at any time from the App.
- Promotional Communications. If you do not want us to use your phone number or email address to send promotional or transactional communications, you can opt out by emailing support@cleo.dating.
Accessing and Correcting Your Personal Information
You may access, correct, or delete personal information that you have provided to us by managing your profile within the App, or by emailing support@cleo.dating. To delete your account and all associated personal information, use Settings → Delete Account within the App. This deletion is immediate and permanent — your profile, photos, intros, messages, and Cleo conversation are removed and cannot be restored.
We cannot delete your personal information except by also deleting your user account. We may not accommodate a request to change information if we believe the change would violate any law or legal requirement or cause the information to be incorrect.
Your State Privacy Rights
State consumer privacy laws may provide their residents with additional rights regarding our use of their personal information. Many states, including but not limited to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Montana, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia may provide (now or in the future) their state residents with rights to:
- Confirm whether we process their personal information.
- Access and delete certain personal information.
- Correct inaccuracies in their personal information, taking into account the information's nature and processing purpose (excluding Iowa and Utah).
- Data portability.
- Opt out of personal data processing for: targeted advertising (excluding Iowa); sales; or profiling in furtherance of decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects (excluding Iowa and Utah).
- Either limit (opt out of) or require consent to process sensitive personal data or process personal data of minors under 18, 17, or 16 years old.
The exact scope of these rights may vary by state. To exercise any of these rights, if applicable, please send your request to support@cleo.dating.
EU / UK Residents
Cleo is not currently offered in the EU or UK and we do not knowingly process EU or UK personal data. If you are in the EU or UK and have used the App, please email support@cleo.dating and we will delete your account.
Where Your Data Lives
All Cleo data is hosted and processed in the United States by the service providers listed above. If you access the App from outside the United States, your information is transferred to and stored in the United States.
Data Retention
We keep your personal information while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete all personal data within thirty (30) days, except where law requires us to retain certain records (for example, in connection with fraud or abuse investigations).
Data Security
We have implemented measures designed to secure your personal information from accidental loss and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure. All information you provide is stored on our service providers' secure servers behind firewalls.
The safety and security of your information also depends on you. You are responsible for keeping access to your phone secure (since your phone is how you sign in). We ask you not to share your phone unlock or sign-in codes with anyone. We urge you to be careful about giving out information in chats with other Users.
Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet and mobile platforms is not completely secure. Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted through our App. Any transmission of personal information is at your own risk. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures included through the App.
Changes to Our Privacy Policy
We may update our privacy policy from time to time. If we make material changes to how we treat our users' personal information, it is our policy to notify you by surfacing a notice in the App or, where applicable, by other electronic means. The date this policy was last revised is identified at the top of the page. You are responsible for periodically visiting this privacy policy to check for any changes.
